From the stories of refugees and migrants who acquired a language, there was always one individual who made a difference for the person to really acquire the language.
Kusala Institute was founded in 2022 and is inspired by those stories with a vision to multiply that possibility for a refugee or migrant’s learning journey. With a free, adaptable, and innovative platform, the pool of learning support possibilities expands beyond a refugee or migrant’s neighborhood or city.
Mission and Goals
Our mission is to ease the language challenges of refugees and migrants to navigate, integrate and belong.
- Develop content in language pair combinations of the refugees’ native and target languages.
- Establish partnerships with NGOs to evolve and adapt the existing technology and expand the content library.
- Broaden awareness to build a world-wide community of individuals who can support a refugee in their native and target language.
How it works
We license a mobile app under the name of Latudio in GooglePlay and the App store. In addition, we also license a web platform to create content for the app. Our service is free of charge for targeted refugees and immigrants.

Language acquisition
Investing in refugees’ language skills and educational qualifications promises high returns. Most language learning is focused on vocabulary and grammar. Our methodology is based on just-in-time understandable listening content with “smart” immersion features. Uniquely, its hybrid design bridges what one learns independently to share and practice in language conversation exchanges with native speakers. Additionally, teachers become language coaches with the ability to see what students tapped on for assigned exercises.
Socialised app learning
Refugees improve their proficiency more when they speak with family, friends, and co-workers than those who do not. Within the app or web version, refugees can share content they want to practice with family, friends, or even a volunteer native speaker. In this way, ease and efficiency promote more exposure opportunities while also fostering integration outside of one’s enclave.
