For one person, Nann, it changed her life overnight. With many of her university professors resigning and not wanting an education influenced by the military, she had to rethink her studies. Nann now studies international business in Thailand where it isn’t as expensive as it is in other countries.
Nann gained English fluency from studying English subtitles from entertaining Korean comedy while she grew up. But that approach doesn’t work with acquiring the Thai language. Thai has complex tone rules and a vast array of vowels and consonants, demanding much more audio practice.
With classes and studies, Nann has limited opportunities to practice the complexities of those tones, vowels and consonants in listening and speaking with Thai classmates. Even though they offer to help, she struggles to find times when they’re both available.
Kusala Institute, in partnership with Latudio, has a language app roadmap of hope for Nann and refugees from Myanmar. Latudio’s focus is on listening comprehension and speaking with an avatar with the ease of tapping to translate any word not understood.
In learning a new language, simply knowing words isn’t enough. It’s the way words are used in full sentences that really counts. A prominent linguistic researcher named Stephen Krashen once said that the best way to learn a new language is by hearing and using language that’s just a bit harder than what we already know. The Laudio app does just that. It lets users listen to how real people speak, helping them learn faster and better.
Language is powerful. It helps us connect, understand, and grow. For people like Nann, it’s more than just words. It’s hope. It’s a chance for a new start. And now, you have the chance to help. By supporting the creation of a free language app for Myanmar refugees, you give them more than just an app. You give them a future. And remember, every bit helps. Together, let’s create change, one word at a time.
To ensure that more students like Nann can effectively bridge the language gap, we ask for your gracious support. Consider donating or virtually volunteering to make a difference in the lives of refugees and migrants seeking a brighter future. For broader societal impact, please reach out to Juan Ghersinich.
